Two sensing technologies
Tail lift safety systems use sensors to detect people and obstacles in the tail lift operating area. When an object enters the danger zone, the system automatically stops the hydraulic operation of the platform. There are two main sensing technologies: infrared (IR) sensors and laser scanners.
Infrared sensors: lower cost, simple installation
Infrared sensors detect objects by transmitting an infrared beam. When the beam is interrupted, the system triggers a stop. Their characteristics include:
- Lower cost: a good fit for typical budgets
- Simple installation: direct structure and short installation time
- Detection range: generally covers tens of centimetres, suitable for standard tail lift safety needs
- Maintenance: lenses need to be kept clean so that water stains or dirt do not affect detection
Laser scanners: higher precision, wider coverage
Laser scanners sweep the area with a laser beam and can be configured with multiple detection zones and distance thresholds. Their characteristics include:
- Higher precision: can distinguish where an object entered the zone
- Wider scanning range: covers larger areas, suitable for large tail lifts
- Multiple zones: different detection logic can be set for different positions
- Higher cost: more expensive than infrared, but offers more comprehensive protection
How to choose?
| Consideration | Lean infrared | Lean laser |
|---|---|---|
| Limited budget | ✓ | |
| Standard-size vehicles | ✓ | |
| Large or high-usage tail lifts | ✓ | |
| Need wider detection range | ✓ | |
| Restricted installation space | ✓ |
Beyond the technology itself, consider:
- the size and frequency of use of the vehicle’s tail lift
- whether the operating environment is complex (for example narrow loading areas)
- the availability of parts and future maintenance support
Both can meet safety requirements
Both infrared and laser solutions can be used in tail lift safety setups that meet Hong Kong Labour Department requirements. Everpeak Engineering’s LD2503 / LD2504 / LD2505 system supports both infrared and laser sensors, with single-sensor (RTS-21), dual-sensor (RTS-19 & RTS-20) and triple-sensor (RTS-22) bracket options.
