02 How does a tail lift safety system work?
The tail lift safety system uses infrared or laser sensors installed on both sides of the tail lift to continuously scan the operating area. When the sensors detect an obstacle entering the danger zone, the system immediately cuts off the hydraulic power to stop the tail lift. The operator must release and re-press the button to resume operation — this "release to reactivate" mechanism prevents accidental sustained movement.
03 What are the Hong Kong regulations for tail lift safety?
The Hong Kong Labour Department, under the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance and related occupational safety regulations, requires all vehicles equipped with tail lifts to install safety devices that meet international standards. Systems must comply with EN1756-1:2021 and ISO 13854:2019 standards, with sensor spacing and detection distances meeting the latest requirements updated in May 2025. Non-compliant vehicle owners and employers may face prosecution and fines.
04 What is the difference between IR sensors and laser scanners?
Infrared (IR) sensors are more cost-effective and simpler to install, suitable for general tail lift safety needs with a detection range of several tens of centimeters. Laser scanners offer higher precision and a wider scanning range, allowing multiple detection zones to be precisely configured, making them ideal for applications requiring higher safety levels. Both comply with Hong Kong Labour Department safety standards.
05 How long does it take to install a tail lift safety system?
Installation of a tail lift safety system typically takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the tail lift model and vehicle structure. The process includes mounting sensor brackets, installing the control box, connecting cables, and system testing. After installation, functional testing is required to ensure the sensors detect properly and the tail lift stops correctly.
06 Does the tail lift safety system require regular maintenance?
Yes, regular maintenance is required to ensure proper operation. We recommend monthly visual inspections to confirm sensors are clean and undamaged, and cable connections are secure.
